Boudica
Bright cotton loose
as they make their way to the concrete stage
Our eyes are fooled
But it’s changing my view
The drum beat cools
Beat, beat, stamp the corners down
The smile, the pride, the shame, the fight
Is it all fading in the heat?
Look how they sing out loud
They dance their bodies around
and the colours are turning out
Hail the autumn leaves
and the winter’s grief
Then spring comes sweet
and summer shows it all
I want to show it all
I want a wrecking ball to take the inner enemy to the ground
I want to know the lessons that I missed
in the season’s education bliss
Where the teachers stayed behind their desks
and girls like me felt so lost
Till the ocean opened up to heal at all cost
You, yes you
I’ll take you on
Do chants of Boudica and the relics of injustice
paint my blood?
Because I love the dancing
but I started to fight in this invisible war
You, yes you,
I’ll take you on
and the resistance in my blood
Because you needed to fight them,
but I needed to dance
So I’m going to dance now
I’m going to dance
